11.5 Ideas related to COMM 244

My main area of interest within communication is Organizational and Intercultural communication. It is amazing how my horizons expanded after taking this Organizational Communication class! The textbook chosen for this class is so rich in information, and I feel it is a resource I can rely on in the future when I am dealing with different contexts of organizational communication.

This was my first on-line class, and I certainly enjoyed it. However, I feel the discussions could be deeper if the format was in person class. The organizational communicational scenarios could be studied through case studies, for instance. Overall this class added value to my professional life, and the knowledge acquired will certainly constitute important piece in my “sand box”.

I agree - I've learned more in this class than most others. The textbook has been a great resource. Interestingly, I feel that the reason this class has been so great for me is because it's been an online class. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to blog about ideas and thoughts. I often find it difficult to discuss things in class because I don't have time to think. The online format has really helped me in this way. I feel like as a class we are communicating more through our blogs then in-class discussions, which are usually dominated by a few people.

I think the conversations are pretty deep, all things considered. At least with an online blog everyone gets to speak their mind. When students occupy a physical classroom, a lot of class conversations are surface level and dominated by a few individuals. I am surprised at how effective this format is at letting everyone share their opinions. I also found it to be a strong motivator to read the textbook; there were real world consequences for not reading it.

I have also learned a lot as well. I think that I have learned more in this class than most other classes because we have been forced to actually read the textbook and do the research. In most other classes you can get away with showing up to the lecture and listening to the teacher, but I think I learn more when I read. I think that the most beneficial part of this class has been actually doing the research and looking at other people’s studies and their empirical findings. In studying leadership and culture, the many hours that I have put into this paper is rubbing off on my long-term memory.
